According to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, Phil’s prediction skills are iffy at best: Check it out here..

groundhog day:

Groundhogs (Marmota monax) also called woodchucks live in burrows they dig in the ground. Female groundhogs are monoestrous (Graph: bottom right) mating occurs only during the spring.
Females in monoestrous species are defined as having only one cycle per year. Dogs, wolves, foxes and bears are animals that are characterized as having a single estrous cycle per year.

climate change:

Climate change is an urgent topic of discussion among politicians, journalists and celebrities...but what do scientists say about climate change? Does the data validate those who say humans are causing the earth to catastrophically warm? Richard Lindzen, an MIT atmospheric physicist and one of the world's leading climatologists, summarizes the science behind climate change.

ontogeny ::

Ontogeny is the origination and development of an organism, usually from the time of fertilization of the egg to adult. In Marmota monax (Woodchucks) Males emerge from winter hibernation "1 to 3 weeks before" females, and begin to fight amongst one another for mating rights because Females are monoestrus (come into estrus just after emerging from hibernation).
